World Without End (No Reported Incidents) | Viennale

Jem Cohen (
Museum Hours) is a gifted miniaturist. Here he displays an exquisite eye and an attentive ear in capturing English town life and its scenes on a commission, so this time, there are interviews. Notable: a hat seller whose product descriptions are a history of English class and custom, and a boy in a school uniform who dreamily pontificates some distance from actual knowledge. "I embraced the chance encounter and rejected the very idea of the definitive," Cohen writes. He did well to do so. Cohen captures delicate gray urban landscapes, fog, light flickering on the body of a plump, fallen pigeon, but most often his focus is on a neutral middle distance, and these images could be framed and hung on a museum wall. They are English yet also universal.
